The Mod Generation

The Society of Cool!

Looking to get into a bit more of this stuff. I love The Specials and some of the other late 70's early 80's stuff but want to try some original bits.

Looking for some good comps with varied music and decent lyrics.

Any ideas?

Cheers...

There's a ton out there but a good place to start is with some of the classic artists that two tone was inspired by. Dandy Livingstone, Symarip, The Pioneers, Desmond Dekker, The Ethiopians etc.

Ska Madness on spectrum music is a good compilation as an introduction.

Get the soundtrack to the film 'The Harder They Come'. That's a fab place to start!

Trojan records have several compilation box sets which contain all of their classics.

Cheers all. I best get cracking!

I would recommend this for a starter - 40 decent tracks and all for under a fiver...

Yes, very nice recommendation Graeme.

Graeme - I have that double c.d. and it's brilliant. And it's not just Reggae but also a few Soul and R'n'B tracks.

i found young gifted and black on trojan records a good compilation  the harder they come sound track is excelent too i think ub40 have covered nearly all the tracks so it would sound quite familiar

Try Street corner, Ska classics and the original rudeboy sound, A crackin CD with real 60,s Ska!!!

Here's two for ya'.

Carry, Go, Bring, Come. - Treasure Isle Mod Ska Anthems 1960 - 1966.

Moonwalk - Treasure Isle Skinhead Reggae Anthems.

Both are c.d.s on Sequel/Castle Music Records. You should find them on Ebay for less the £10 each.

Apart from the Trojan box sets, there´s good compilations on SoulJazz Records.

Ah- and there´s good ones on vinyl on "King Edwards", obviously based in Birmingham!?

Cheers again all!

From that lot, my favourite so far has been  'The Harder They Come'. soundtrack. I already knew Pressure Drop, as I am a massive Clash fan. The lyrics are good and not too many love songs. Sorry, but love songs ain't my thing, find them a bit soppy, haha! The rest I am gonna plough through over the next day or two!

Nice one!
