The Mod Generation

The Society of Cool!

Was wondering how many of you's only put an L plate (if you need one) on the back of your scooter and is it worth the risk? Also what do most people get away with in terms of cutting down the white boarder and making it as hidden as possible. Cheers

isnt the law nowadays for youngsters that  if youre caught out with a couple of minor traffic violations and you end up with  6 points youre banned ?

that would be the teenage me off the roads for a while !

i wouldnt take any chances with anything karl in that case

For me and I stress for me. Following the rules is what we DON'T do ! Thank god our brothers back in the day didn't or we would all be " wearing flat caps and going down pit"... For me it's about attitude, a mind set and a swipe at the rules. Freedom of choice should be the mantra not " shinny new shoes".
Far too many people running around thinking that the clothes and the music makes you a mod. WRONG its your attitude to life and the challenges overcome that shape you..
We all know the rules but some of us enjoy bending and/or breaking them !!
I will continue not to use L plates . I don't want to pass my bike test on a 400cc motorbike. My primavera is my choice and I will not be fleeced by governments who just want my money

I Agree, I,m not paying £600 to take a test, which these days is basically an assault course, totally over the top, I Never took my test in the 60,s because we moved onto cars as quickly as possible, I Wished I had, because all you did was ride round a Traffic island, and stop when the instructor jumped out in front of you, and that was your test! and you could ride up to a 250cc on a provisional so that was all scooters covered, you could,nt take passengers though although we did, Roberts correct, rebelling against all forms of authority is Mod, not abiding by the rules, or worrying what colour laces to have in your desert boots, Theres the laws of the UK, Then theres my laws, I go by my laws, and B********s what anyone thinks.

the roads arent a playground though

i see d*ckheads who dont even see 44T lorries coming never mind motorbikes

if youve never been instructed properly on how to ride a motorcycle or how to employ defensive riding then the clock is ticking till that encounter with that drunken / uninsured /  person who  makes their own set of rules ....just like you do ... is coming

even if you have hitherto got away with it for years .

youre very vulnerable on two small and relatively slow wheels in todays faster and faster world

Think we need to understand what being insured means. Insurance companies spend millions trying NOT to pay out. Adding anything to your scoot and I mean anything (mate was caught out because he had added a front carrier and a grab rail ) invalidates your cover.
Having toast instead of your usual eggs on the day of the crash invalidates your insurance. I am being flippant however my point is the same. We are fighting people who put insurance premiums up at a whim, are more than happy when poor parents have to fork out two grand to cover their seventeen year old kid, and spend millions on adverts that we have to pay for. When was the last time you heard of an insurance company of any standing going bust ?

How many of you out there have a 125 registered scoot with a 200 engine fitted or a Polini kit ?
For me its not about speed or engine size fair enough to those who are into that. It's about style and individuality. As I said get an old project do it up gradually and sell it on for double. The new 50cc will lose 3/4 of their value in the first 12 months. Cheers for the support Paul

I,m insured, have a CBT , Don,t drink, and have no convictions, but I,m not displaying L Plates because they are,nt cool, it does,nt make me safer, or dangerous, and it won,t stop a drunk driver hitting me,I Agree with Hubert as far as Young riders go,they should have tuition, before being let on the roads,  And i agree about the disgrace of the insurance companies, legalized Thieves, and their allowed to get away with it! underhanded cheats and criminals, just like the politicians, and your supposed to live under their rules? I Don,t think so.

snap on that!

Do you wear a helmet?

Yes, I Wear a helmet, I Went to Italy to a Soul allnighter, and brought a beauty over there, it looks great, I Knew 2 lads who were killed on scooters in the 60,s, Helmets would possibly have saved them, I,d rather ride without, but they are essential I Think, But In my day time Job as a Carpenter, I refuse to wear them, unless its a dangerous site, I can,t work with a Helmet, Gloves, Goggles, Hi Viz, Boots, Sun barrier, when I,m fitting a kitchen in a house with people living in it, stupid morons Health and Safety, I Don,t agree with their rules, I,ve worked for 47 years with no accident, plus it ruins my hair, and as a Sax player at night, I Must have a cool hairstyle, so I now only do domestic work, no H&S knobheads there! But I do think it should,nt be law to wear one, or a seatbelt, I Might take up Sikhism, then I don,t need one!!

Hi All,

I use Rubber Mud Flap (L) plates Which look OK on all three of my Scooters but do not have them on the front as I see this as pointless. Why would the traffic coming towards you need to see your scooter or motorbike has an (L) plates on it.

Its the traffic coming up behind you that you need to worry about, we are slowing than motorbikes.

The main reason I have put them on is, if caught the law can in some cases, take your scooter off you which could be an expensive mistake to make.

Most Traffic Coppers will leave you alone these days and only normally stop the young kids riding the Zip scooters, as these kids are  mental, as I was at that age, but I am alot older and wiser now.

Its the beat coppers who want to be Traffic Cops you need to be weary of.

I have not taken my full bike test as I have no desire to ride a motorbike or scooter at 70mph, 55mph is good enough for me and has been  for well over thirty years now.

Lots of top MOD scooters in the 60s had (L) plates on.

Lets not give the EU or police a reason to stop us doing what we love, ride our scooters,

Ride safe,

Keep the faith.

as for some replies to this thread and the cavalier attitude to peoples own safety

the mind boggles

has it occurred to anyone that youre handing  a get out clause on a plate to an insurance firm who has covered a driver you may be in collision with ?

imagine walking away from a serious accident [ or should that be  not walking away ] with nothing... " because we do or own thing  man ! "

if you dont like L plates enrol for proper motorcycle lessons with a view to passing your test .

you'll be amazed at what you learn

i dread to think what bad or dangerous driving habits you lot who couldnt give a feck have drifted into over the years

this screw those  who rule us thing has me fascinated as well

that part of the peoples revolution just  covers the bits  of the road traffic act you cant be arsed with does it ?

but youll be stumping up tax and national insurance on your wages  and paying your council tax and tv licence i bet  .

some revolutionaries

power to the people ! ! !

it just re inforces my idea that the roads are full of eejits and you trust no one while out riding .

including fellow scooterists
