The Society of Cool!
I hang with a few cliques in Sheffield and the lack of good neat clothing is shockingly bad. Don't get me wrong they are great people but I'd say from a total of around 40 people only about 6 of them wear a suit let alone own one and I find this truly a sad state of affairs. So my question to you folks is how many people in your circle wear a suit?
It seems to me that most people consider themselves being a mod because they wear a Fred Perry polo with the top button done up. Since the FP appears to be in fashion at the moment, it could mean that people are trying to pass themselves off as mod but have little understanding of the culture and would probably be a punk or somethinig the next week; to them it's just a fancy dress party which they do at the weekend. I'm sorry if I come across a bit brash or snotty, but it's how I feel about things? Any of you people relate to this?
Agreed. a suit is the best way to be seen. For the record when I wear a Fred I dont do up the top button.
I agree Small Paul. As much as i love my Levi jeans, Adidas trainers and 'Casual' style coats, for a night out it always a suit, button down shirt and loafers.
Unless it's a gig and then it's cords or jeans and trainers or Desert Boots. I always end up on my arse if i wear shoes for gigs. lol.
a nice ,well made suit is a must ,but ffs get your trousers the right length ,i hate it when the role up on your shoes
A mod with no suit in his or her wardrobe??? shocking..
I really agree with your comments about Mods( in inverted comma's) that only dress Mod at the weekend or at do's.What the feck is that all about?? fecking part timers, its all or nothing for me.
And Gem thats another pet hate of mine too, trousers that drape over your shoes, dreadfull, it ruins the whole look.
Have to say I button my polo shirts and shirts right up though like that look.
Haha quite right gem, I HATE when trousers crumple up at the bottom. My girlfriends mum took up a pair of trousers for me a while back and she kept asking if I was sure I wanted them that short. When I finally put them on my girlfriend says "Ooohhhh I see what you mean!"
LOL me too, gem - I nearly got into a bout of fiusticuffs with some City types a while ago, cos I mocked them for paying silly prices for "designer" off the peg suits & not having the taste or good sense to pay an extra tenner to have their trousers taken up!
Sorry for delay- only just read this thread. I'm 55 in a couple of weeks and still wear my strides to the top of my shoes- I hate to see them hanging round your ankles like a broken concertina. This was a bone of contention with my wife and the source of endless arguments- I'm ditching the bitch, via the divorce court, next March.
I've got the loafers and I've got the sta prest, and I agree bunching up on your shoes is not good, but I'm scared of hemming them too short :(
Has any one got a photo (preferably from a low angle) which shows just how low/not low they should hang?
I wear a suit all week for work and at weekends i like to wear jeans/ Harrington dessert boots unless its a party or an occasion then its back to a suit and tie I dress down at weekends.
I agree that "hip hop" style is very very tired esp. w/ the prison look, aka "the sag"...and all that goes w/ it. Not too long ago I walked thru a club just full of those types, and it was as if they had witness a Martian? (yet in a good way!) Birds half my age all over me (I kid you not) Moral of this story?.... a sharp tailored look is far more rebellious and attention getting, than what's currently marketed as style. I still had to leave the music was just too awful!!!!
For me gettin suited up would be for a nite time do at a Rally or a special Mod Do/Event. I wouldn't suit up for the local do or a regular Mod nite.
I am a great lover of Fred Perry always worn top button done up. Aint worn a cravat since my teenage years in the late 80s...it looks good, may do it again one day.
Back to Suits, lets get some perspective, times are hard and not everyone can afford a decent suit. I'm all for encouraging new blood and remeber how MOD can be snobby and young Mods looked down on cos they may not be able to afford all the gear! My advice on this front check out the Charity shops Ebay for MOD bargains.
Also the suit aint best wear ridin ure scoota....except for Posing=special MOD Events/Rallies!!!
On a night out , its always a Suit for me , or trousers Jacket and Button down Shirt, i have a few Suits to choose from, so , yea , all about looking sharp and smart.........
