The Society of Cool!
In this day and age not many of us live still in the area where we was mods for various reasons.Do you ever go back, are they still standing or not, become a charity shop or a supermarket, bingo hall ? I lived in Ilford and moved to Clacton -on - sea 9 years ago. Nearly all the places we went to in the 60's / 70's are long gone. Most of the pubs are closed down, Ilford Palais changed name many times and finally was pulled down a few years ago> I saw THE WHO, SMALL FACES, GENO WASHINGTON and many more there. Most of my early mod haunts were school youth clubs, church halls, used to hang about Ilford swimming baths on a sat night, they used to board over the first class pool and bands would play. Remember hearing the Pretty things fantastic, Don't go back so it might be gone. as i reached 15 started go to the local late nite coffee bars, a hive of music and my first ever burger and real coffee. 2 big ones was the Mocha and the Casa - Maria. The Mocha only closed in the last few years still run by the same family i believe. Also blues, bombers, doubles, purple hearts and others.

The flats that I moved to after that in the north of Glasgow are still there. The building for one of the clubs we went to (The Lindella) was knocked down only a few months ago. The other (the Scene) finished up at the end 1982 as a Mod club but the building is still there. But it is quite incredible the amount of changes that have occurred over the past 30 years or so. Of all the boozers that were well know Mod haunts in the late 70s/early 80s (The Mars bar, the Rooster, and Brookes) all have ceased to operate.
