The Mod Generation

The Society of Cool!

On BBC Four last night. Just watching it now on iPlayer http://www.bbc.co.uk/iplayer/episode/b012cnww/The_Perfect_Suit/

A good watch so far for anyone who's interested, especially for me who's still young and new to the Mod world so it's helping me learn more about the details of suits.

Whilst talking about suits, what's the deal with not doing all 2/3 buttons up? I've always thought it looks quite smart but have heard a few times, including on this program, that you just NEVER do it?

This should explain it

Why doesn't one button the bottom button on a suit or waistcoat?

It takes too long to get your pointed aluminium comb out of your pocket if the bottom button is done up Ian lol

I think if I  carried a pointed aluminium comb these days it might arouse suspicion, Reggie, as I'm a bit "folically challenged" these days! (bald as a coot to be more accurate)

hahah Tell em you're carrying it for your mate lol if that fails go for the ' oohh what ?it was a plant, honest guv'nor ! ' lol

On the same subject , why hasn't anyone come up with the 'allow an extra inch on the trouser waistline , there'll always be room for the blackjack then ' lol

yeah good idea cos everyone will think im pleased to see em if me black jacks sticking out the front of me strides

Thanks for posting Karl. Definitely a good watch.

I think I saw this a few months ago - is it the one with the tailors in London, and then our hero goes to Hungary to see suits get cut?

Yeah that's the one. Really interesting watch although wish it had gone on about Mods for longer.

If you like em all fastened up then fasten em, rules are for breaking !

I've read/heard you don't do up the bottom button because the suit pulls awkwardly downwards towards the bottom button when its done up. This is because it's tailoring tradition that you make the suit so the bottom button is left undone, you can see how the bottom button makes the fabric crease awkwardly towards the bottom button on a suit that fits well. Hope that helps :)

Karl, have a look at the video "The Move - Disturbance". I posted it in the video section a couple of months ago. It shows the Move getting measured for suits in 1967, it may be of interest. By the way the soundtrack is in Italian.
