AAAH! The Beatles. So much has been written about them. I have followed them since 1963 and been a huge fan of thier music. If anyone reading this wants to know more about them, then a couple of excellent books worth reading are "Revolution in the Head" by Ian MacDonald and "The Beatles Anthology"
Were they Mod. No! They started life with Lennon forming the Quarry Men, Paul joined in 1959 and they did'nt do much until the went to Hamburg in 1960 as the Silver Beatles. Their uniforn on and off stage were leathers, clothes that most teenagers were wearing then, really as a form of revolting against the establishment at the time.Thier "Mop Top" haircuts were styled by Astrid Kerchner, a friend of the band and lover of Stuart Sutcliffe (the fifth beatle) in 1961. It is true that in 1962 Brian Epstien cleaned up their image and put them into suits, they all hated wearing them.!!
As they went through the early sixties they dropped the suits to a more relaxed style, and around 1966 when the Small faces were THE MODS the Beatles were looking towads India and dressing accordingly evIdent on the Sgt Pepper album released in June 1967. This influenced the hippie period. There is no doubt whatsoever that that they changed the face of music, but i dont think they ever influenced the young of the mid sixties the way they dressed.

I would never classify the Beatles as Mod- but this doesn't detract from some of their excellent sides.

Which, I imagine, begin and end with "Norwegian Wood"?
Please say "yes".
Permalink Reply by Ruadhán J McElroy on July 17, 2012 at 21:43 They re-named themselves The Beatles after being inspired by Buddy Holly & the Crickets. Lennon thought of other musical insects, and decided "the beatle" was best, as it evolved from the beetle on pure beat.
Not Mods, but I've always appreciated Lennon's and Starr's senses of humour.

Roxy Music was more Mod than the early Beatles -- and I've written a dialogue in a novel I'm working on that concisely explains this position on Roxy Music.
