The Society of Cool

We are losing alot of the old singers so I wanna know who's your favourite soul singer of all time? For me it has to be The Godfather Of Soul, Mr Superbad himself James Brown (God rest his soul).

Sam Cooke was and still is the greatest soul singer of all time!

Male: Curtis Mayfield, without second thought.

Female: Mavis Staples, without second thought.

And maybe the "whities":

Male: Steve Marriott (of course, who else?)

Female: Julie Driscoll

Though I´ve already voted my top ones, I feel the need to mention General Johnson of the Chairmen Of The Board!

Otis Redding and Etta james my favourites from a very long list of great soul singers.

Obvious but...Aretha Franklin, Otis Redding, James Brown and Bobby Bland.

Yes yes yes, Otis Redding singin "Down in the Valley", because that one doesn't get over played.

Etta James is definitely the sould queen for me

Possibly Sam Cooke, Ray Charles, or Smokey Robinson for me, although there are so many that its all but impossible to even pick a top ten. For female Soul favourites I would go for early 1960s Tina Turner (no, not that 80s nonsense) Dusty Springfield, or a lady I just saw live last Sunday Martha Reeves.

male between smokey robinson and marvin gaye. mind if eddy holland had kept on singing but then marv johnston very difficult. worse when it comes to the ladies. mary wells, martha revees or carla thomas. too many great singers.

Love Otis Reading,Sam Cooke,Curtis Mayfield .you could go on all day with this.Aretha Franklin is up there too.

its a toughie...Otis Redding or Levi Stubbs? Ok Otis it is.

Respect to the white soulsingers - Steve Marriott and Janis Joplin for me.
