I agree Peter.

weller didnt cast mod aside like a lot of others when fashions changed and stuck with it thru thick and thin

however marriott carries the mod look off better though but

IMO  on final analysis  its weller that gets my vote for the longevity of it though

Would say Weller but!! As most Mods love Marriott with a passion. I was lucky to meet him after playing in a local hotel when he was in Steve Marriott and the DT's. Due to some musicians {local blues band - The Roadrunners} that I was mates with asked back after closing and had a party and a half. Got to say I stuck out like a sore thumb as they were all like hippys and Steve was doing more smoke than Bob Marley!! My mate introduced me and the man himself gave me a smile I will always remember and said a song for you mate and played All or Nothing on guitar. Man I couldn't speak a magic moment.

Bit unfair to compare,Marriot looked the business for a couple of years, but it was the fashion at the time he was a teenager, and he soon changed with the next fashion.I saw him play in 85 and he looked like a vagrant.Weller CHOSE to be a mod, apart from a few dodgy looks/outfits like most of us,he looks sharp, and his look has evolved with his age.

Reminded myself of what Ronnie Lane says on his"Passing Show"dvd,"we didnt think about being mods,it was just the fashion at the time" (or something close to that.)!

You see the thing for me and mods of a certain age ! is that Weller came along too late for us to consider him a 'proper' Mod I believe it was 76 when Jam appeared , that's second generation Mod so really difficult to compare the two , when The Small faces were touring everybody saw them and loved them live, how many people saw the Jam ? after Marriot left I  dont consider The faces to be in even my top 10 Mod groups.

The Musical talant of the likes of Steve Marriott Ronnie Lane far out shine any thing that wellar has done or will do if lives to be a hundred don`t forget the other two died young so who know`s what they be doing today had they lived ?.

Four years into the Small Faces history they had broken up and Stevie Marriot had joined Humble Pie. Four years after The Jam's first hit they were still making excellent records. Even for the first few years of the Style Council Weller was on top form. If you prefer Humble Pie to the Jam then fine, whatever floats your boat. I remember hearing a Small Faces LP from the mid 70s (cant remember its name) and it was really bad, but if some people liked it then fair do's to them.

Thats surely because the faces were a million miles from being a mod band
That reply was for derek gardner
That being the case i cant be aproper mod then as i only got into it in 84, damn the accident of my biirth i wanna be a 'proper' mod.........

It's personaly accepting the situation Paul that makes where you are in the pecking order so much clearer. as it said in another post  there are the originals and the imitators.
