"Brilliant stuff as ever from Mr Will-iams. People keep going on about how the Mod scene has to move with the times, well this is one of the directions it should be heading towards. More of the same pleeeze ha ha"
"Hi Ruby. Quite a few take their scooters but no one is quite daft enough to actually drive them from Glasgow to Brighton, and then back again. They just hire a van and put the scoots in the back. The last time we just took a flight to Gatwick and…"
"Well its a great and long weekend Ruby. The last few years i have tried to take in every night. I am hoping to do so again this year and have my ticket for the Georgie Fame gig on the Saturday night. I am sure i will bump into you."
"Oh well, if you are not a fan of Stars in their eyes you will definitely not like the Small Fakers. Best steer clear of them and just go and see all those Mod bands that have a forward looking ethos."
"Probably not quite as easy Ruby. I feel that you tend to lose a lot of shyness and inhibitions as you get older. Maybe I will get a chance to say hi to yourself at one of these do's, possibly the weekender in June. And if I am part of a group…"
"Its really the same people that are said to have kept the faith in the north of England when the Mod scene had died out elesewhere. There are photos of gatherings of a few hundred like minded souls at Scarborough in Easter 76,77 etc you get the…"
"I have to be honest here and say that I feel that it is quite easy to talk to people that I do not know at Mod events. Its probably a lot to do with having so much in common, and also the fact that I am fairly comfortable talking a lott of piss to…"
I first got into the Mod scene around October 1980. By April of the following year I had my own scooter bought from Mickey Oates in Glasgow.
The best times undoubtedly came when I met up with a crowd of guys and girls and started to go to the lindella and Scene Club. Glasgow in 1981 was a fantastic place to be a Mod in, incredibly vibrant. Some times it was possible to witness more than 100 scooters gathering at the one time, and on one ocassion for a Scene Club shoot there must have been more than 200. A great scene, fantastic music, and as cool as it is possible to get on this earth.
Top 5 tunes at the moment:
Helpless - Kim Weston
Ain't it Baby - The Miracles
One Eyed Jacks - Jimmy Cliff
Chills and Fever - Ronnie Love
If You Ever Walk Out of my Life - Dena Barnes
Bye Bye Baby - Mary Wells
Chris......it must be seriously 30 or so years since i last seen you, Station Cafe on a Friday night and all, after the Lindella....many a scrap in the cafe happening with punks and greasers, and sometimes, unfortunately mods with each other, pies and chips flying everywhere to the sound of "To cut a long story short" from a passing new romantic with a radio or cassette player! (Jeez, that sounds old!!)
Sorry for not chatting with you today. I wasn't ignoring you. I was on the phone to a colleague from work discussing some procedural things I am compiling. Hope you can forgive me?! All psyched up for the Ringo Starr gig on Sunday! LOL! ;-) Chat soon!
