The city has certainly changed a lot, even from the 70s John. You are sort of right about the Gorbals, but the buildings were good solid sandstone one's and in later years all those sort of buildings were revamped, and with internal toilet facilities added they were really nice. In place of the crowded slums in areas such as the Gorbals they built high rise monstrocities, and most of them have been pulled down. The Gorbals was one of the main areas that the Irish moved into in Glasgow alongside the High Street and Saltmarket, and these areas were renowned for being a bit wild. But when they knocked down most of the Gorbals in the mid to late 60s they tore the heart out of the place. I think teachers, religious one's or not had to be a bit tough in these places. The kids in Glasgow were mostly nuts and they could sense weakness at 100 paces.

Great to read about your Mod and pre Mod days John. The first house I had in the Townhead area of Glasgow still had no inside toilet or bath. In fact even in 1966 more than 33% of houses in Glasgow still had no inside loo. We moved away to high rise flats before I was four, and so most of my life was with the luxury of inside facilities.
The primary school I went to was run by Marist Brothers, and although they had a bit of a reputation for being tough they were actually perfectly okay. They were very big on education and our school was miles ahead of any others in the area, so they must have been doing something good. The head teacher (Brother Aiden) also drove a Vespa.
