So, there I was, a schoolboy in his last year, just coming up for seventeen, Punk rock was riding high, the year, 1979. One of my favorite "punk" bands was a three piece known as The Jam, I liked there style, I liked their suits. I noticed whenever I went into town on a saturday, punks with spiked…

Mod Girl Memories
Back in 1982 a young mod girl stood back and admired her first scooter-a black Vespa 90 with customized Union Jack side panels. Bleached blonde and bouffanted wearing a little too…

I have just come across this great British Pathe site. There are loads of period clips including the audience at Ready Steady Go, scooter rallies and fashion. Here are some I like.
This is a very weird silent clip of Mayfair in 1957 but it does show some early modernists on scooters. Not sure what Nell Gwyn and the flamenco dancers are about.

Close your eyes for a moment and try to imagine a band that could capture every element of the mod scene you love, from the 60s to 79, from ska to revival, from Hammond organ to trumpet, be totally rooted in the original 60s mod scene, and yet utterly contemporary…an impossible dream?
In September I found that band.…

Behind Closed Doors - The Ladies Rooms
Let’s face it-there are certain things that only us womenfolk are able to experience or understand, you know the sort of thing, the need for vast numbers of shoes for example or the reason we possess ten lipsticks all the same colour, and why it takes us hours to pick a dress yet less than…

WINTER WARM UP
Step back a few decades to the 1960s and Pontins was probably once a thriving little holiday destination with Camber Sands as the perfect beach backdrop. Nowadays though the old place has lost its sparkle and the chalets are a little sad with the same old style kitchen appliances that were probably installed when the…

As far back as I could remember, my tastes seemed to have stuck out from other children. It was the mid 1990s, and I was settling into my new home in Long Island, New York after spending my infant years in Queens. Along with other kids of my generation, I was sort of attached to my television set, except that I was absorbing the likes of Queen's 'Bohemian Rhapsody' (the first music video I could remember seeing) and 'Dreams' by The Cranberries in tandem with the flow of cartoons and that.…

Soulful Alsorts started off life on Radiomagnetic and originally went out live on a Sunday afternoon. Fraser Dunn built up a good live following and exchanged e mail banter with soul fans from all over the world. Sadly (well for us) radiomagnetic decided to move to a listen on request format.
Soulful Alsorts transferred to Subcity and built its audience above and beyond our old listenership. Today we're in the top five shows on Subcity for live and Listen Again audiences. Our fellow…

DECADES OF STYLE and ATTITUDE.
In 1963 at the height of the mod movement a small clothing factory opened in Brighton, and one of Britains most enduring style icons was born.
The Ben Sherman Originals label was set to become a corner stone of mod clothing. The company was founded by Brighton born Arthur Bernard Sugarman when he noticed the growing trend for imported American, Ivy League style, button down shirts made from Oxford cloth. The company…

The styling is very "retro" leaning on both Sixties mod styling and a cafe racer look. The clincher for me though is the subtle features that demonstrate that is riding gear designed by scooterists; take for instance the longer than usual sleeve. This is done with consideration to the scooter riding position, sat upright with arms out stretched, very clever.
It is one thing looking stylish, but the modern scooter rider is very aware of the fact that todays roads are busier, faster and…
