The Society of Cool!
Look out for a great new compilation on the Trojan label which our very own Robert Nicholls has been instrumental in putting together. In addition to compiling the tracks Robert has written special sleeve notes for this great collection of Mod Ska.
As you'll be aware, Robert has been very proficient in documenting his memories of the early 60's mod scene (you can read his reflections on the introduction of Ska/Blue Beat to the UK in Black & White & Blue (beat)) so it is great to now have a collection he has personally been involved with. At only £4.99 for a double cd, with the authenticity of having been compiled by someone who was actually there when these tracks were first played in the mod clubs of London, you cant go wrong with Mod Ska!
I know that Rob is also keen to work on a compilation based on his memories of the Scene Club and hopefully this release will be a precursor of more great collections to come...
As Trojan say: "Annotated by original Mod, Robert Nicholls and supported by the widely respected Mod Generation site, 'Trojan Presents Mod Ska' features 40 Ska, Calypso and early Rock Steady favourites of the original sixties scene, originally issued in the UK as such seminal record labels as Blue Beat, Island and Doctor Bird, 17 of which make their CD debut."
Priced at just £4.99, 'Trojan Presents Mod Ska' is released on 29th October, along with two more titles in the popular range, 'Trojan Presents Boss Reggae' and 'Trojan Presents The Producers', with copies of all three available now for pre-order from the Trojan shop.

It was impossible to get tickets to see The Specials :(
Comment by Robert Nicholls, Ph.D. on November 17, 2012 at 13:48 Thank you guys. Glad you like it Roy, and thanks for the promotion Stephen. My copy finally arrived yesterday--I'd been hearing all the positive reports but I didn't have a copy to play until now. I'm elated, great sounds, well-recorded too, very clean, they don't sound old at all. The graphics are less than perfect but Trojan had to trade-off legibility of liner notes with clarity of photos, it seems the latter lost out, but I'm not complaining the liner notes are all-important. FY!, they'll be another 3 set album shortly of Early Mod Classics, i.e. 1962 and before. I'll keep you informed.
Comment by Roy Allen on November 5, 2012 at 15:16 HI Rob,

Comment by stephen hughes on November 1, 2012 at 13:42 Double cd for £4.99 - you could break into your piggy bank for that
Comment by Chris Cameron on November 1, 2012 at 13:34 I will certainly get the CD despite having the vast majority of the tracks on others. But a great looking addition to the collection.
Comment by stephen hughes on November 1, 2012 at 10:06 Got the cd today - interesting (and extensive) accompanying notes written by Rob Nicholls and the tracks are of course perfect! Well done Rob - what a fantastic job!

Comment by Bill V on October 24, 2012 at 21:59 A superb compilation of classic cuts. Getting all this in one place is very convenient and it should get me going on the way to work.
